AAA Industry Vets Behind That’s No Moon

Bolstered by a $100 million investment from Smilegate, a team of veteran developers from across the gaming industry announced this week they’d joined forces to open That’s No Moon Entertainment.

Michael Mumbauer, Tina Kowalewski, Taylor Kurosaki, and Nick Kononelos are leading the studio. The team currently boasts developers from Uncharted, Call of Duty, Destiny, The Last of Us, and many others.

Their first project is an ambitious “singleplayer third-person action-adventure.” Leading that game will be Taylor Kurosaki as the Creative Director, and Jacob Minkoff as Game Director.

Kurosaki and Minkoff have been long-time collaborators. They met at Naughty Dog and worked on Uncharted and The Last of Us together before both left for Infinity Ward. While at Infinity Ward, they teamed up on campaigns for Call of Duty Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare.

Singleplayer stories are going to be at the heart of what comes from That’s No Moon. They believe that story and gameplay “are not two distinct ideas, but rather extensions of each other.” They want to craft stories that stay with players long after the credits roll on the game.

It also looks like they want to blur the lines between television, movies, and games. From the blog introducing the studio “we believe that the stories we tell should not be limited by any given medium.”

The studio has 40 developers right now and is growing. They’re looking to employ 100 developers by 2022, and are currently hiring across several disciplines. You can follow the studio on Twitter to check out what they’re up to.

Are you excited to see what comes from this studio? I know I am.
